Praying Mantis

Abby walked home from school with this little guy in her lunchbox. She found him on the playground and wanted to keep him as a pet, but I wouldn't let her. I explained that he/she would be much happier on the flowers outside.

There is something magical about finding a praying mantis. Their insect qualities seem to disappear and I have always watched them with curiosity. This week they seem to be a fading reminder of summer.

They are good to put in your garden. Like lady bugs, they eat pests.

I really think, in fairness to Travis that you should tell him about the beautiful insect and allow him to add it to his collection. We had to swallow our love for them the other day and allow Sam to do the same. It was painful.

So funny you should mention that, Lisa, because this afternoon he found a beautiful big green one that he wanted to add to his "collection". Abby thought for sure it was pregnant. (How do you even tell?) Poor Travis gave in to our wailings and she/he is now safe amongst the bushes. Travis' collection won't nearly be as grand as Sam's now.

When my husband and I were first married, we found a praying mantis and kept is as a pet all through the summer and into the fall. It laid and egg sack that hatched next spring (outside!). They are so amazing.
