It's a Real Lemon

Yesterday I had a complete FAIL. This is my first (and most likely last) attempt at making a lemon meringue pie. My sweet mother-in-law requested one to celebrate her 86th birthday and I love her so much that I gave it a shot. I CAN bake pecan, peach, apple, and pumpkin pies, but, obviously, not a lemon meringue.

It doesn't look a bit like the one my mom used to make and not even close to Martha's (below). *Sigh*

It was so sorrowful looking that I could only muster up putting one lowly candle in it.

My kind and gracious mother-in-law insisted that it didn't matter what it LOOKED like, only what it TASTED like. I must admit it really was delicious, even if it did turn out to be a lemon of a lemon meringue pie!

I am certain (as this has been my experience), that if you had only been making the pie for yourself that it would have turned out beautifully. There's something mystically destructive about making a dessert for an audience that almost always dooms it to failure. I'll never forget the first ice cream cake I made that was served as melting ice cream with chunks and crumbs of cake in it, or that chocolate silk pie where the eggs were added when the chocolate was still a bit warm... Don't despair. Just make one for yourself next time! And, for whatever it's worth (since I haven't actually tested the information), I read that the fresher the eggs are, the better they turn out in the meringue.

Julie. Your mother-in-law is RIGHT. It doesn't EVEN matter how it looks, it's all about the taste. Just look at me. I know!! Plus, it looks pretty darn good to me...and don't you know you should NEVER compare yourself to Martha!

You're a saint for even making the attempt!

XOXOXO!

That second shot of it looks fabulous! I love lemon meringue pie, but I haven't made it for years. It sounds so good right now. You've inspired me!

Yum!
I love Lemon Meringue pie!
And Marianne is right you shouldn't compare yourself to Martha. She has lots of people who just make her look really smart. Lol! And among many other things, you have a clean criminal background. Oops, did I say that?

I ruin food all the time. Martha Stewart has some seriously lame recipes out there that don't always work. Some of them are great, but there are quite a few duds.

I would look for a recipe that someone recommended to you, or that has a million reviews online. It looked delicious. I would totally eat that!

It looks good to me!

I say taste is what matters, although I do like my food to look pretty, so I get that! Unfortunately, I can never make mine look very good OR taste very good, so you've got something going for you!

LM is my favorite pie, too! It is a hard, tricky one. John has made me some wonderful tasting, close-your-eyes-and-it's-perfect pies over the years for my birthday. You are in good company. I have tried it with flopping results and finally decided to leave it to an expert friend, and just ask for one. My mom-by-marriage loves German Chocolate cake, so I have forced myself to learn to make it well, from scratch. The things we do for love!
