Weeding Surprise

Yesterday evening I spied a weed in one of the flower beds close to the house. It was unexpectedly tall so I began to tug. I was completely taken by surprise to discover that I had unearthed a baby walnut tree!

How in the world did THAT happen? We are devoid of walnut trees in our neighborhood.

I smiled and called the kids. Together we "oohed" and "awed" and paused at the tiny miracle.

Then . . . I tossed it in the yard waste bin.

Also, we saw walnuts on the ground a couple houses down from yours on Sunday and thought it was odd...

That's cool. We had a walnut tree in the yard of our duplex when Greg was in grad school and I don't ever remember seeing a seed sprout like that. You guys must be lucky! They are a VERY messy tree. Smart of you to get rid of it while it's little and doesn't require a chain saw!

So is there a Johnny Walnut Seed in your neighborhood? Birds doing the seeding?

We have walnut trees in our area and birds pick up the nuts and drop them from somewhere high (like the streetlight) onto the pavement to break them open. Sometimes one will land on the grass and voila, soon it sprouts.

Aha! Perhaps the riddle has been solved. Thanks, Julie C.

I wonder if a talented Mag Pie brought it to you? We loved our walnut tree because we loved the birds that it attracted.

This is why you have no walnut trees.
